The majority of the curriculum encourages students to look at basic nutrition – what the ‘eat well plate’ looks like and how this can be achieved. Students will learn all of the basic technical skills required to produce a meal and have the opportunity to make and learn about food from around the world, increasing and enhancing their current knowledge.
Cooking can help students learn and practice some basic Maths concepts and build language skills. English literacy is embedded when reading and designing recipes, as well as introducing new words to vocabulary. Following steps in the recipe can work on speaking and listening skills when working in small groups.
What is it?
The FoodWise Short Course gives candidates the opportunity to develop and accredit their practical cooking skills, as well as building knowledge of a variety of food-related issues.
The flexibility of ASDAN’s Short Courses means they can be carried out in a variety of settings, over a time period to suit the individual or co-ordinating centre (up to 60 hours). Challenge descriptions can be interpreted and adapted according to the situation.
This Short Course can be completed using the student book or is available for learners to complete online through the ASDAN e-portfolio system. Learners log in to complete challenges, record skills development and upload evidence. Tutors can view learner progress and sign off work, leaving feedback as needed.
